A Small Learning from My Mom That Changed My Daily Routine

Being born into a Jain family, I have always been surrounded by the teachings of non-violence (Ahimsa), truth (Satya), and self-discipline. Jainism isn’t just a religion; it is a way of life that influences every aspect of our daily habits, from the food we eat to the way we speak and interact with the world. Among these invaluable teachings, a small yet profound lesson from my mother changed the way I approach my daily routine.

One day, as I hurriedly finished my breakfast and rushed towards my daily activities, my mother gently reminded me, "Every action you take, do it with mindfulness and gratitude."*At first, it seemed like just another piece of advice, but over time, I realized its deep significance.

My mother explained that in our fast-paced lives, we often take simple things for granted—our food, water, and even the air we breathe. In Jainism, we believe in respecting all forms of life, no matter how small, and this belief should extend to every action we perform. She encouraged me to be present in the moment, whether eating, speaking, or even walking.

Following her words, I started making small changes in my routine:

1. Eating with Awareness– Instead of eating in a rush, I began savoring every bite, understanding that countless efforts go into bringing food to our plate. I also became more conscious of choosing sattvic (pure) food that aligns with Jain principles.

2. Speaking with Kindness – Jainism emphasizes the power of words. My mother’s lesson made me more mindful of how I speak, ensuring that my words bring positivity rather than harm.

3. Walking with Care – Before stepping out, I began to check if any tiny creatures were in my path, aligning with the Jain belief in non-violence.

4. Showing Gratitude– Each morning, I now start my day with a moment of gratitude for all the blessings I have, a practice that fills my day with positivity.

This simple yet powerful teaching from my mother transformed my approach to daily life. It made me realize that spirituality is not just about rituals; it is about living with awareness and compassion. In today’s fast-moving world, where distractions are endless, practicing mindfulness and gratitude can bring true peace and happiness.

This lesson, rooted in Jain values and nurtured by my mother’s wisdom, continues to shape me every day. Perhaps, if we all embraced this small yet powerful habit, our world could become a more compassionate place.
